Ferret Rain?
Sunday, July 29th, 2007When it rains it pours. I haven’t written much lately because it has been very busy here. In July we’ve received in 15 ferrets with 12 of them being turned in during the last 10 days. We’ve got 3 more coming in tomorrow too! Luckily we have a big shelter room and just enough collapsable cages to keep up with the added numbers.
One of the things we spent the show proceeds on were cages. I just ordered new cages for the shelter and they should be here within 6 weeks or so. My office is letting me send them to our warehouse so shipping will be WAY cheaper.
As for show results, the shelter raised just a little over $2,000 and we split it 50/50 with Quad City. Out of everyone who attended the show, we only had one complaint and it sounded like they didn’t understand what ferret shows were about. Apparently, they felt they should be able to touch all the ferrets without any owner complaints and they also said having ferrets in cages was cruel. They did mention the show was a bit unorganized, and I do have to agree. Some of our volunteer help backed out last minute, so we had to cover multiple jobs.
Apparently a short segment was shown on Channel 7 that night, so that was decent PR. I’m curious if that is why we’re getting rained on here.
We’re happy to take the ferrets in, and I’m glad I bought more cages, but I think I was hoping to swap out some of the older ones with the newer ones instead of filling all of them up!
On a different note, two of our adrenal girls who had surgery didn’t fare very well afterward. We lost one little girl (who was really naked beforehand) about a day and half afterward. Tweekers is still struggling to recover and has had a little bit of internal bleeding (which we can’t really do anything about right now. To put her under would probably kill her). She’s on supportive care, fluids, heat pad, and soup. She’s a fighter and I hope the internal bleeding has stopped. This is the hard part of sheltering. We make medical choices that we hope will result a healthy, happy ferret and sometimes we’re wrong. This is the first time we’ve had a double-wrong and it hurts.
I suppose I’ll just open my umbrella and make the best of the downpour. I’m happy to know that they are all, at least, eating well, safe and comfortable here. BIll and my brother who is visiting are always wonderful about extra ferret-things we need to do. I’m really glad Bill is as invested as I am, or there’s no way things would work.
Cathy’s weather is not much different than ours. Adoptions should pick up shortly.
