Magic Number 33

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

It’s a prime number, kind of pretty too until I think about what it represents. We have 33 little bodies waiting for homes right now, 66 eyes, 132 feet, 660 nails to clip. Luckily they are here with great food and soft bedding instead of being listed in the paper waiting to go to the higest bidder. Some are perfect when they arrive, some are naked. Some poop in their food bowl, others are pristine with the litterbox, but all of them are welcome.

BIll and I get tired, stressed, aggrivated, but all-in-all we really love these little guys. I’ve been thinking about the “bigger” picture and know that sheltering is doing little for the world as a whole, but I guess sometimes little things can mean a lot.

For instance, we adopted Adriana out this past weekend to a couple who had been here about 4 months ago to ADV test, etc. They didn’t adopt right away because they wanted to save up enough money to put away for a medical emergency as well as to have the adoption fee, etc. When they were here 4 months ago Adriana had just come in. She was skinny, oily, would run up and bite without warning and was quite unsocialized. In fact, Adriana had run out and grabbed the man on the leg and bit him quite hard back then. She had wanted to play, but wasn’t sure how to get his attention.
When the couple came by this past weekend, we took Adriana out to meet their ferret. She did really well. Her fluffy soft coat and calm demenor seemed to work well with their mellow guy. She played with both the man and woman and behaved herself. It wasn’t until I resaid Adriana’s name that the man realized that this ferret he wanted to take home was the same little skinny miscreant that assaulted him only 4 months before. Adriana was like a totally different ferret, and she was _different_ she was a ferret with a new home.

Never fear, Ichigo and Regalia are still together. Ichigo decided a little while ago that Adriana was not his favorite, so for those of you worried about breaking that pair, he was kicking her out of the hammock for weeks! :)

On a different note, my latest thought has been the idea of getting a backup generator. I think about the thunderstorms we get here and know the power goes off sometimes. What happens if it goes out for 4 hours on a 100 degree day. We have a backup window A/C unit if the forced air goes down, but without power, we have nothing. I suppose that is my next research project and grant proposal. Maybe when the shelter population goes down, I can start to think about it. For now, I’ll be spending my time matching wits with the little ferret who likes to poop in his food bowl.

That’s news from here.
