Little Man, Satin, and Jayden

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Hello everyone!

This is Cathy from up in Moscow again.  Just figured I’d let people know how things are going up here.  We currently have three ferrets in our care up here.  We still have Jayden, who was an owner surrender from this area, and then we also got Little Man and Satin transferred up from the EFS in mid-September.   All the ferrets are doing well.  All three of them are “special needs” ferrets that need some form of special care for the rest of their lives, so we are watching them up here to help out the EFS.  They still are available for adoption if anyone is interested in them, but for the time being they are just residing up in Moscow enjoying life.

Jayden was an owner surrender from up in Moscow, she is a very sweet loving girl, but came from a pretty bad situation.  You can read about that on a previous blog entry.  We aren’t really sure on her exact age, its hard to say because a lot of her teeth are badly damaged, but she looks to be between 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old.  She’s had her ups and downs but always fights through it.  One of her top canine teeth was broken off at the gumline, the little tooth behind that canine is completely gone, and her back molar on that side has suffered some damage.  Her other top canine also is cracked.  Because these mouth injuries were obviously caused by a massive head injury, we suspect that she also suffered some sort of jaw injury in the past because one side feels like the bones fused back together incorrectly.  Probably at the same time as the mouth injuries she also suffered injuries to her eyes and is completely blind in one eye and partially blind in the other eye.  And all through this she still is the sweetest most loving little girl, she just hates all other ferrets and prefers to spend time with humans.  But because of her mouth/jaw injury she has problems eating dry ferret kibble.   If that is all she is fed, she will stop eating and start wasting away.  So while we provide her with a bowl of kibble at all times, we also feed her a large bowl of soup twice a day.  She seems to really enjoy her soup.  She is a private bred girl, she comes from Camelot Place Ferrets over in Oregon.

Little Man is a sweet boy as well.  He is a Real Canadian boy who is about 4+ years old now.  He came to us from the EFS earlier this month.  He came from a pretty bad situation as well and had major eye issues when he came to the shelter due to the owners using nasty clay cat litter.  He had his left adrenal removed in May but his right adrenal is also enlarged and couldn’t be removed, so unfortunately his time is limited.  Melatonin doesn’t seem to be helping him either.  Shortly after we got him he suffered a “mild stroke” or something to that extent.  Most likely his right adrenal that is growing around the vena cava caused the blood to either be cut off from his brain for a while or maybe a clot broke free and got into his brain.  Either way he did recover from that.  He did seem to suffer minor brain damage from that incident, but for the time being he is almost back to his normal self.  He loves to cuddle and adores the companionship of other ferrets.  He really isn’t a huge fan of his cagemate Satin though, he prefers more laid back ferrets.

Then we have Satin.  She’s an interesting one that’s for sure.  She is 4+ years as well and is also from Real Canadian.  She has chronic eye problems that originated from the clay cat litter, so she requires drops to keep her eyes from getting all infected and gross looking.  This is why shelters always say, never use clay cat litter, it can cause issues like this to happen.  If that isn’t bad enough the poor girl has heart issues and has an enlarged heart and it can cause her to start coughing.  So she gets meds for that as well.  She also is showing signs of early lymphoma.  However even with all these problems she still is quite an active girl.  Definately not a cuddler, but she is very playful, likes to get into everything and she hates all other ferrets other than Little Man, so she can often be found biting at the bars of the other ferret’s cages.  She really would make a great single ferret, she likes all the attention to be focused on her.

If anyone is interested in adopting any of these ferrets, wants updates on their progress, or wants to see pictures of them, drop me an email at our shelter email: quadcities@emmettferret.org.  Even though the ferrets are up in Moscow, if someone in southern Idaho is interested in adopting them we can always transfer them back down to Emmett.  All of them would love to have a forever home someday.
